The Sunshine Coast allows for a more peaceful, less paced lifestyle. With over 56,000 hectares of parks across the District, there is a wealth of opportunities for recreation.
Should someone need to commute, BC Ferries Langdale ferry runs every 2 hours from Horseshoe Bay, on the Lower Mainland, to Langdale, a 40 minute sailing across the beautiful Howe Sound. Current Conditions provides live camera feeds from the Ferry Terminals. From there, Highway 101 is the main artery that travels the coast.
If you are considering commuting from the Sunshine Coast to work in Vancouver, you're not alone. There are now 4 Commuter Vans that actually board the Langdale Ferry, Monday - Friday, offering commuters the option of door-to-door service, between work & home. These vans pickup commuters, drive onto the ferry and drops off, each commuter, at work. There are a number of other pooling options available. For details, see Van Pools.
Across the Lower Sunshine Coast, there are two Municipalities: Gibsons and Sechelt. Outside of these municipalities, your local government is the Sunshine Coast Regional District. Sechelt, the land between two waters, is the largest town in the area, with a population of approximately 8,500.
Gibsons is the home of "The Beachcombers", the longest running TV drama in Canadian history. Today, Molly's Reach (photo right) operates as a full menu restaurant in the quaint Village of Lower Gibsons.
Gibsons is in the process of re-defining itself. Building on its rich heritage and history, Gibsons continues to promote Tourism in the area, but is now actively pursuing an expansion of its economic diversity. With the addition of , less dependent on resources and tourism the Town , . through the consolidation of the surrounding areas in what is called the Gibsons Economic Development Partnership. The Town of Gibsons has a population of over 4,000.
The main economic activity in the area is logging, pulp and paper, tourism and retirement related services. Retail, Construction & Manufacturing are the leading industries, by employment in 2001. Tourism is the SSC's third largest private sector contributor, after forestry and fishing.
